Hiking Raven Rocks

Today, we headed out fairly early to a stretch of the Appalachian Trail in northern Loudoun County that heads north from Rt 7 to Raven Rocks.  The hike was an out and back with a total distance of 5 miles and mildly hilly.  The last stretch of the trail leading to Raven Rocks actually takes you into West Virginia so this was a multi-state adventure.  Quite exciting!  The weather was beautiful and we were treated to a nice view at the end.  The hike was followed up with a visit to nearby Veramar Vineyards where we did some wine tasting and were all suckered into joining their wine club.  Soon, we’ll all be receiving quarterly deliveries of two exclusive and exciting varieties of wine.  Very high class!  ;-)   Here are photos from the hike…

Hiking Old Rag

Jared and I did a spur of the moment hike of Old Rag Mountain today.  It was my first time on this hike since college and it proved to be interesting and enjoyable.  As we set out from the parking area, we quickly noticed that we were following a trail of marshmallows.  Every 30 feet or so, there was another one.  Our questions were eventually answered as we neared the top and overtook a group of teenagers equipped with a variety of atypical outdoors equipment, including a viking helmet, a wig, a healthy supply of pot, and…a bag of marshmallows!  More pictures here.
