BRMRG Mini-reunion

The Blue Ridge Mountain Rescue Group was holding their annual bivy training night and a few of us were talking about camping this weekend.  Once we realized that the training was happening, a big group of old members decided to join in at the last minute.  Many hadn’t been to a training in several years.  We arrived in Charlottesville and got dinner at Anna’s Pizza for old time’s sake.  Took a quick trip to the store for fondue, cider, and hot chocolate supplies.  Did night land navigation on O’Hill and then camped in a big tent city while the trainees and Sean slept in shelters they had built earlier in the day.  Old members in attendance included:  Jason and Melissa Dalton, Tommy Rumley, Constance Kwan, Matt Jorge, Sean Happel, Sarah Johns (it was her birthday too), Kristin Brubaker, Dan Christy.  Thanks to everyone for coming and to BRMRG for keeping things rolling, it was a great time!

Hiking Mary’s Rock

Continuing with the recent hiking theme, today a nice big group hiked Buck Hollow and Mary’s Rock.  The Buck Hollow loop took us from Rt 211 up to the Skyline Drive.  From there it was an out and back on a short side trail and on the Appalachian Trail to get to Mary’s Rock.  It was a beautiful Fall day – a little chilly with a nice breeze.  We were treated to a great view, ate a total of at least 30 sandwiches, and hiked 9 miles.  I also sprained my ankle again on the way back down.  Now for another two weeks of limping around and not being able to run.  I’m ready to not be handicapped… Click here for pictures of the hike.
